Tyler Vreeling - Fat Crow Design
Tyler Vreeling grew up on a grain farm in northern Alberta. His parents'
farm was located about a half hour drive from the nearest town of 1200 people
(Manning). Tyler has lived in several areas for several different reasons.
For two years he served as a missionary in Las Vegas and Reno. To put himself
through university and to gain experience, Tyler would pursue jobs in places
like Edmonton, Alberta or Richmond, Virginia and later return to Las Vegas.
During his education at the University of Alberta, Tyler would play an important
role in shaping the Industrial Design departments Student Design Association
(SDA). Exhibitions attended through the SDA include the VH+IDS, and the
coveted ICFF in New York (marking the first Canadian school to do so). During
this time Tyler helped design two award winning projects including a Best
of Canada Design Award.
Upon graduating, Tyler saw no existing opportunities to put his degree to
work, so he headed up the design of an entire line of furniture in less
than two months in order to exhibit at the World Market Center in Las Vegas.
It is this line of furniture, called White Moose which he hopes will gain
international attention for an emerging multi-disciplinary design firm,
of which he is Principal.
In a search for funding, Tyler was referred to the Meet the Money project
by Eric Petersen of Total Financial Solutions. Seeing that there was nothing
to lose, Tyler found himself pitching to the panel in round 1, only four
days after hearing about the competition. "This is great, in terms of raising
awareness of up-and-coming businesses in our province. I'm just glad there
are people out there who want to listen to and help people like me who may
not fit the rigid mold that conventional lenders have laid out," says Vreeling.
Aside from design, Tyler also enjoys exploring in the outdoors, a little
pond hockey, and the Foo-Fighters, whose music keeps him awake while working
late into the night on various exciting projects.
